Joust is an arcade video game developed by William Electronics and released in 1982. As part of the games two-player cooperative gameplay concept each player uses a button and joystick to control a knight riding a flying ostrich. The objective of the game is to progress through levels by defeating waves of enemy knights riding buzzards.
Jousts development team, led by John Newcomer, included Bill Pfutzenreuter, Janice Woldenberg-Miller, Python Anghelo, Tim Murphy, and John Kotlarik set out to create a game that avoided the then popular space-theme.
In the game, the player controls a yellow knight riding a flying ostrich or stork, from a third-person perspective. Using the two-way directional joystick and the button for flapping the ostrich's wings, the player directs the knight collide, or joust, with enemies.Â
The objective of Joust is to defeat increasingly challenging waves of enemy buzzard-mounted knights called Bounder, Hunter, and Shadow Lord.Â
Founded in 1958, Midway Games was an American video game developer and publisher of many well-known franchises including Mortal Kombat, Rampage, Spy Hunter, NBA Jam, Cruis'n, Ms. Pac-Man, and NFL Blitz. Midway also acquired the rights to video games that were originally developed by Williams Electronics and Atari Games, such as Defender, Joust, Robotron 2084, Gauntlet, and the Rush series.Â
Officially-licensed Midway Arcade Games collectible merchandise.
